Bridesmaid gifts for a dark-romantic wedding

Bridesmaids in black, bouquets of deep red and plum, candles everywhere. If that is your wedding, the usual blush-pink bridesmaid boxes will not fit. Here is how to give your bridesmaids something that matches the mood — for the proposal or as a thank-you.

Proposal or thank-you?

A proposal gift asks the question; a thank-you gift is given on or after the day. Both work well as a small, personal object. If you are giving both, keep the proposal small and the thank-you a little more considered.

Choose a mood, then a design for each

Dark-romantic weddings usually lean one of three ways. Pick the one that matches yours and choose a design for each bridesmaid within it.

Deep-toned florals. Each bridesmaid can have her own design and phone model.

Asking the question

Write the question on a free RSVP-style card: pick her design, write your message, then text, email or print it. We do not add notes to the package, so the card is how your words reach her. Printed on heavy ivory stock and sealed with wax, it looks like part of your invitation suite.

Practical details

Every case is $24.99 with free US shipping and ships within 48 business hours. Ship each one to your bridesmaid, or all of them to yourself to hand over together. If you do not know someone's phone model, a digital gift card lets her choose. Returns are free within 30 days.

Pairing it with something else

Thank-yous after the day

If the proposal gift was something else, a case in her design makes a good thank-you after the wedding, with a printed photo of the two of you on the day. Send it a week or two later, when the excitement has settled.

Keeping it fair

If every bridesmaid has a different design, choose by personality rather than closeness, and present them all the same way. If you would rather avoid comparisons, give everyone the same design in their own phone model.

Timing

Most couples ask bridesmaids six to twelve months before the wedding. Delivery depends on the carrier after the 48-hour dispatch, so order a couple of weeks before you plan to ask.

Bridesmaids who do not wear black every day

Not every bridesmaid at a gothic wedding is a goth herself. For the friend who loves you but dresses in pastels the rest of the year, choose one of the gentler designs from the same family — the night meadow or the wisteria — rather than the darkest. She will still match the wedding photos, and she will be happy to carry it afterwards.

The same goes for colour on the day. If your bridesmaids wear mismatched dark dresses, let each choose the design that sits best with her own dress; it makes the getting-ready photos look deliberately curated.

A word on presentation

Dark-romantic weddings live and die by the details, so wrap each gift the same way: black tissue, a garnet or silver ribbon, a small wax seal and the printed card. Line the boxes up on a table at the proposal dinner or the rehearsal, and the set will look as considered as your invitations.
